Gqebera Youth Empowerment is a registered NPO located in Walmer township , Port Elizabeth . Walmer township is one of the poorest arears in the Eastern Cape . Common issues in the township include unemployment, HIV/AIDS, alcohol abuse, child neglect, crime, and illiteracy.
The NPO's vision is to inspire communities of Walmer/Gqebera to sustain a community in which its youth can develop to their full potential and informed choices in an environment free from prejudice, discrimination and deprivation. "We also aim to empower the young people of Walmer township to believe that they can be great leaders of today, starting with their own lives; changing themselves so as to changing their communities and enabling them to develop into youth leaders who aspire to lead their lives with integrity and honesty without any ulterior motives or self-gain" says Mr Siya Makwabe Project Manager at the Gqebera Youth Empowerment Initiative known as YEP .
During the COVID-19 Pandemic which has taken the world by storm and left many families helpless the NPO has been hard at work , providing food parcels to the residents of Walmer township , helping both the elderly and the young with blankets to keep warm , helping Women with sanitary towels as well as donating clothes to children .
